Directed Dreaming or Lucid Dreaming
Lucid dreaming means only to be aware of the fact that you are asleep and in a dream. There are degrees of lucidity whilst dreaming and also degrees of control. It is possible to have no control of events whilst still lucid dreaming. Directed dreaming is to be in control of the lucid dream and tailor the events, people and places to your own desires.
Often the thing that attracts people to lucid dreaming is the potential to do things that are impossible in real life such as flying or fantasy fulfilment such as sex with an imaginary or real but unattainable partner. With directed dreaming there is the ability to achieve these things with no social or physical consequences to your actions.
Lucid dreaming is also potentially the cure for nightmares as once you know that you are in a nightmare and the events are not real, you have the power to either alter the events so that they appear harmless or just the realisation that it is a dream may be enough to render it non-frightening.
Do dreams hold the secrets to success? There is evidence that the brain’s activity during a dreamed event is exactly the same as during the actual experienced event when awake. So a dreamed event can be a rehearsal for the real thing. This can help with such things as public speaking, difficult confrontations, artistic or athletic performance. In many cases lucid dreamers report using dreams for problem solving and artistic inspiration.
Healing dream imagery can improve physical health. It is possible to speed recovery from injury or disease by directed dreaming.
Lucid or directed dreaming can be learnt but it is first necessary to develop the skill of dream recall. Being able to recall your dreams will greatly increase your ability to have lucid dreams.
