This article is concerned with feng shui remedies, also known as feng shui cures, or the intervention-aspect of traditional Feng Shui practice. Feng Shui is the traditional Chinese art form of placing and arranging items in your surroundings to maximize the flow of Chi in the environment, thus bringing good luck and fortune into your lives. Most practitioners agree that Feng Shui is really a two-step process: prevention, and remedy. Prevention can be thought of as the ‘default’ treatment process– anything that can be fixed first, is. Anything that cannot be fixed, be it due to physical or other constraints, is then remedied.
Let’s look first at one of the most common feng shui remedies, the bamboo flute. It is unfortunate that this particular remedy is often misunderstood. Many people believe that the bamboo flute provides a form of Chi push and enhances the energy in a room, thus adding power, safety, peace and endurance. Sadly, this is not true. The bamboo flute is not an ‘essential’ remedy, but just another wood element item. It does not address any problems created by exposed ceiling beams, and should not be treated as a herald of good news either. Bamboo flutes are one of those strange remedies that are often used incorrectly.
Another common feng shui remedy is the bamboo plant. On its own, bamboo is a remarkable plant – it is strong, tough, hardy, and grows in all sorts of conditions with little maintenance. This makes it ideal for feng shui practitioners and enthusiasts, as the plant symbolizes all the elements and characteristics that we wish to draw into our own lives. There are actually two forms of bamboo used frequently – the full-sized bamboo plant, of which you are undoubtedly familiar, and what is known as ‘lucky bamboo’. The full-size plant is found naturally, and recommended because of its authenticity. The smaller ‘lucky bamboo’ plant is usually pot-based, and is something of a bonsai bamboo plant. This makes it great and ideal for apartments and smaller homes, where larger remedies are impractical.
When applying cures and remedies to your home, you must keep in mind the bagua map used in Feng Shui. What you need to keep in mind when using the bagua is how you orient it to your home – you can either use the traditional compass bearings, or align it to the entrance way to your home. All the different aspects of the bagua will remain the same, of which you are undoubtedly familiar.
