Every musician needs a CD. Think of it as a "talking business card." You will be perceived as a true professional if you can produce a CD of your music and you will feel more confident as well.
Leave your CDs with potential clients.
Do you work at live events, such as weddings? A CD is great for potential clients to hear the style and quality of your music. Print your contact information on the sleeve and any other important information, such as media reviews, etc.
Sell your CDs.
You can also earn money with your CD by selling them on your web site or at live events. If you play at a large art festival or other show, you should be able to sell your CDs without paying a fee to do so. A fund-raising event, such as a banquet for the local ballet, most likely won't have the funds to pay you, but they might be very willing to allow you to sell your CDs as remuneration for your services.
Approach local businesses to display your CDs for sale. Not all will be agree to do this, but many will, especially if you give them a percentage of the sales. It's another stream of income for them that didn't exist before you came along.
For example, florists and caterers might hand out your CDs to brides.
Your music.
Choose selections that demonstrate what you offer to the public--wedding music, party music, etc. If you have more music than will fit on one CD or a variety of music, consider making several CDs and/or one highlights CD that acts as the "business generator."
Select art work for your CD.
Choices here run from none, just text, to hiring a graphic artist for original art. A photo of yourself and/or your group helps clients identify with you. If you create your CD on-line, you may be able to choose from a variety of sleeve art, as well as upload your photo. Maybe a friend or college student would create art for you in exchange for credit on the sleeve.
Jewel cases or paper sleeves?
If you are handing out a lot of CDs, for example, at a trade show, you could choose paper sleeves and place paper inserts in the sleeve with your contact information. This will keep your costs down.
For one-to-one meetings with clients, use a jewel case. It makes a better impression.
Your CD is a tireless promoter, booking agent, and salesperson. Make your own CD now!
